ANALYTICAL
24 A 0.001° C. and heater capacity of 1700 w. Other temperature ranges are available on special order. The temperature regulator has no moving parts, a feature especially desirable in applications requiring dependable operation for long and continuous service. The instrument is designed for the precision temperature control of the constant temperature baths used for refractometers, viscometers, pycnometers, and ASTM equipment, as well as for the control of the temperatures of ovens, furnaces, and related thermal equipment. 5 Carbon-Labeled Urea
C'Mabeled urea is available commercially for the first time from Tracerlab, Inc. Specific activity will be 1 millicurie per millimole. The minimum order will be 1 millicurie. This intermediate is useful in the synthesis of various biochemical compounds such as purines and pyrimidenes as well as for the preparation of urea-containing plastics. 6 Universal Balance
Voland and Sons has introduced a new universal balance which combines the speed of the fastest projection balance with an accuracy that exceeds the standards required of the finest analytical balance. I t has a sensitivity 10 times that found in conventional projec tion balances. Weighings to an accurate fourth decimal place are ob tained in seconds by straight projection, or to the fifth place by shifting sensitivity and add ing an additional decade of weights. All weights from 0.01 to 200 grams are built in the balance and are obtained by manipulating five selector knobs. Speed is gained by projection reading, eliminating need for weights in lower ranges. Weights can be readily lifted out of their supporting members for recalibration or cleaning. 7 Dehumidifier
A portable, heavy-duty moisture control unit within the budget and space requirements of research laboratories that must maintain precise humidity levels under varying con trolled temperatures has been designed by Dryomatic Corp. This model maintains relative humidity down to as low as
15% in enclosed areas up to 10,000 cu. ft. I t operates at temperatures from —40° to 100° F . The dehumidifier functions by drawing humid air through a permanent dehydrating agent—a combination of activated alumina and silica gel—then discharging the dry, dust-free air back into the room. I t works in cycles: dries for 2.5 hr., vaporizes the absorbed moisture for 30 rnin., and then switches to the drying from the reactivation phase automatically without external control. The "time-delay action" feature assures that the desiccant is thoroughly dehydrated and cooled before the unit switches back to the drying phase and thus prevents undue rise of temperature in the room during the beginnings of the drying cycles. The unit draws a maximum of 0.96 kw. from a 110-v., 60-cycle single phase line. The self-contained fan motor is a Vioo hp., 24-w. rotor type, capable of moving 32 cu. ft. of air/min. through the machine. 8 Differential Colorimeter
Manufacturers Engineering & Equipment Corp. is offering the Colormaster differential colorimeter which can be used for color measurements of synthetic fibers, paints, liquid solutions, pig ments, and slurries. Three color filters give approxi mations to the ICI Χ, Υ, and Ζ functions, and transmissions and reflections are measured directly. The linearity of the instrument is within approximately 0.2% reflec tance or transmission down to 10%. The dead zone (backlash) does not exceed 0.02% re flectance or transmission. A complete set of color measurements can be made with the Colormaster in less than 30 sec. The results are read directly from a dial to 0 . 1 % . 9 Magnetostriction Oscillator
Almost any laboratory can now conduct its own investiga tion of the effects of sound energy on liquids, living organisms, mixtures, and chemical reactions by means of the Raytheon Manufacturing Co.'s magnetostriction oscillator. The oscillator is composed of three parts: a driving ele ment, a stand containing a drive coil, and a rod-and-cup assembly. The unit derives its power when the rod, which consists of a series of nickel laminations, is subjected to an alternating magnetic field. This causes it to oscillate longi tudinally, vibrating the diaphragm which forms the bottom of the cup. The cup itself is water-cooled to allow testing
