The 1949 Nichols Medal, presented each year by the New York Section of the AMERICAN

CHEMICAL SOCIETY, will be

awarded on March 11 to I. M. Kolthoff of the University of Minnesota. Dr. KolthofFs contributions to the field of practical analytical chemistry, and physicochemical theory, vital to newer methods of ana lytical chemistry are widely recognized and mainly responsible for his selection as the 1949 Nichols medalist. James J. Lingane, Harvard University, one of Dr. Kolthoff's outstanding students, and Maurice B. Visscher, University of Minnesota and one of Dr. KolthofFs closest personal friends, will discuss the medalist's scien tific and professional accomplishments. A. reception will be held a t 6 P.M. and a dinner will be served at 7 P.M. in the grand ballroom of the Statler Hotel, New York, Ν. Ύ. The addresses and presentation of the medal will start a t 8:30 P.M. and members and nonmembers of the New York Section of the AMERICAN CHEMICAL

SOCIETY are invited to attend the recep tion, dinner, and presentation. Tickets, which include both the reception and dinner, are $5.00 per person and reserva tions should be made on or before March 9 with E. J. Durham, New York University, New York 53, Ν. DRYMET is the most highly concentrated form of metasilicate available because i t contains n o water of crystallization. Unique among alkalies— it combines strength with buffering action which prevents abrupt changes in p H . If you use alkali—investigate t h e advantages of DRYMET. The annual stipend is $2,500 and will apply in any institution whose undergraduate course of instruction in chemistry is ap proved by the Society. In Canada, the institution selected must be approved by the Chemical Institute of Canada and the ACS. A fellowship will be voted con tingent upon the successful candidate who obtains acceptance from the institution and professor selected for the study pro gram proposed. I t will be awarded to that applicant believed to be likely to contribute most to the advancement of the theory and practice of analytical chem istry during the fellowship and in the fu ture.
