F o r d e t e r m i n a t i o n of s e r u m albumin. ο - [ ( p -Hydroxyphenyl) azo ] benzoic Acid ( E A S T M A N 10614) (also known as H A B A ) H A B A d y e binds with serum albumin in phosphate buffer at p H 6.2 t o 6.4 t o form a colored complex with absorbance at 485nm. The reaction follows Beer's law over a wide range of concentrations. [Clin. Chim. Acta, 12,532 ( 1 9 6 5 ) ] .

For phosphorylation. 2-Cyanoethyl Phosphate Di(cyclohexylamine Salt) ( E A S T M A N 10964)

Monophosphate esters of nucleotides are readily pre pared b y using 2-cyanoethyl phosphate di(cyclohexylamine s a l t ) . F o r example, thymidine-3'-phosphate is prepared from 5'-0-tritylthymidine b y condensation, followed b y acid hydrolysis, then mild alkaline h y drolysis. [J.A.C.S., 83, 159 ( 1 9 6 1 ) ] . Similarly, steroid 21-phosphate esters are synthesized b y using 2-cyano ethyl phosphate. [J.A.C.S., 85, 1118 ( 1 9 6 3 ) ] .

F o r r e d u c t i o n of polycyclic quinones. Aluminum Cyclohexoxide ( 1 M in Cyclohexanol) ( E A S T M A N A10941)

Polycyclic quinones are converted t o hydrocarbons u n der reflux with aluminum cyclohexoxide; pentacene6,13-quinone yields pure pentacene. The starting quinone is readily prepared from phthalaldehyde a n d 1,4-cyclohexanedione. [Tetrahedron Letters, N o . 1, 5 (I960)].

For reduction, debromination, a n d s y n t h e s i s of c y c l o p r o p a n e s . Zinc-Copper Couple ( E A S T M A N 11122) Phthalide is prepared from phthalimide in 70% yield by using zinc-copper couple in aqueous alkali, followed by acidification and crystallization. [Org. Syn., Coll. Vol. 2, 526 ( 1 9 4 3 ) ] . 1,4-Dibromo-l-phenylpropane is debrominated with a mixture of zinc-copper couple and dimethylformamide t o yield cyclopropylbenzene. [Org. Syn., 44, 30 ( 1 9 6 4 ) ] . A number of cyclopropanes are prepared b y the S i m m o n s - S m i t h reaction of olefins and methylene iodide with zinc-copper couple. [/. Org. Chem., 24, 1825 (1959) a n d / . Am. Chem. Soc, 80, 5323 ( 1 9 5 8 ) ] .
