WEB SITES The Center for Renewable Energy Systems' (CREST) Web site (http:// solstice.crest.org) features a Green Building Advisor and Solstice, an Internet information service with recommended sites and new resources. The CREST site is also enhanced by more than 20 topic areas related to renewable energy with case studies, journals, databases, related sites and organizations, and discussion groups. Global access to recycling markets is available at Recycler's World (www. recycle.net). Recycling exchanges for more than 20 items, such as computers, commercial equipment, composting, scrap, and precious metals, are listed. A Links Library offers resources in 14 topic areas, including ecological economics, ecotourism, green procurement, sustainable agriculture, education, and waste reduction. Responsible consumption and environmentally sound values highlight the subject areas featured at the Center for a New American Dream (http://newdream.org). This holistic Web site looks at diverse topics such as sustainable consumption, international issues, spirituality, parenting, and policy making and recommends related sites, organizations, and discussion groups. A monthly update highlights new resources. New electronic resources, such as the "Great Green Web Game," are reviewed at www.sustainablebusiness. com. Other resources recently added to this site include a directory of sustainable energy companies and a database for the Australian environmental industry. This site also features information on business activism, opportunities, events, a Links Library, and news updates from the Sustainable Business Insider.

BOOKS Calculating Risks: The Spatial and Political Dimensions of Hazardous Waste Policy, J. T Hamilton; W. K. Viscusi (MIT Press, 1999, 337 pp., $37.50) In this comprehensive analysis of the magnitude of hazardous waste risks and the efficacy of EPA's Superfund program, EPA decision data are matched with detailed census information to show that most hazardous waste sites do not pose sufficient risk to merit the most stringent cleanup options. 100 A Case for Wetland Restoration, D. L. Hey; N. S. Philippi (Wiley & Sons, 1999, 225 pp., $64.95). Tracing more than two decades of progress in wetland restoration, this book discusses the key public policy issues surrounding wetland restoration, describing the shift in federal public policy from wetland destruction to restoration and explaining how Section 404 of the Clean Water Act has worked for the environment. 101 A Comprehensive Guide to the Hazardous Properties of Chemical Substances, Second Edition, P. Patnaik (Wiley & Sons, 1999, 1007 pp., $149.00). This updated reference guide examines all facets of the primary characteristics of organic compounds, metals and inorganic compounds, industrial solvents, common gases, particulates, explosives, and radioactive substances, correlating the chemical structure of compounds to their hazardous properties. 102 Protecting Public Health and the Environment: Implementing the Precautionary Principle, C. Raffensperger, J. Tickner, Eds. (Island Press, 1999, 411 pp., $30.00). required to support a more precautionary approach to environmental and public health hazards. 103 Toxicity Assessment Alternatives: Methods, Issues, Opportunities, H. Salem, S. A. Katz, Eds. (Humana Press, 1999, 270 pp., $99.50). A review of the progress in developing acceptable alternatives to classic animal toxicity assessment methods, this book discusses such key points as tissue cultures for dermal toxicity and endocrine disrupter assessment, validation of alternative tests, transgenic models that reduce the time and cost of carcinogenicity testing, molecular modeling to explain chemical toxicity, and in vitro protein denaturation to assess ocular and dermal irritation potential of cosmetics. 104 Understanding Our Environment: An Introduction to Environmental Chemistry and Pollution, Third Edition, R. M. Harrison, Ed. (The Royal Society of Chemistry, 1999, 461 pp., $44.95). This updated textbook deals with many of the chemical fundamentals of environmental systems, as well as their behavior, emphasizing die interlinkages between environmental media, summarizing the major human and environmental impacts of pollution, and introducing the institutional measures needed for control. 105 Visions of Technology: A Century of Vital Debate About Machines, Systems, and the Human World, R. Rhodes, Ed. (Simon & Schuster, 1999, 399 pp., $30.00). Through a collection of more than 200 writings, this book examines the unexpected and complex ways that technology has shaped human life in the 20th century and offers an informed discussion of the ways in which it is likely to affect the future. 106 For more information on products and services mentioned in "Online/In Print," use the Electronic Reader Service System found on ES&T's Web site.
