Burkhart, President of Lever Brothers Company, at the opening of the company's new Research and Development Center at Edgewater, N. J., in 1952. I t represents a management attitude toward research that has enabled Lever Brothers to pioneer and bring to t e a s of millions of homes new and improved products in the fields of soaps and detergents, shortenings and margarines, dentifrices and toiletries. Many of these products have been household names for generations—Lux, Rinso, Lifebuoy, Pepsodent, and Spry. Lever Brothers Company in its 60 years of operation in the chemical process industry- has attained a position of high recognition in the industrial economy and family life of America. I t is associated ^with Unilever, world-wide industrial and marketing organization. The company operates seven manufacturing plants in this country to make products t h a t are for sale in every drug and grocery store in America. There is a steady expansion through research; since 1951 the -work of the research and development staff has enabled the company t o market 15 new products.
Research Center Research at Lever Brothers Company is conducted at its new, integrated Research and Development Center at Edgewater, N. J . The Center is located directly across the Hudson River from New York City. I t is convenient to many pleasant residential areas with good schools, churches, and shopping centers. The Center consists of a five-story laboratory and two-story pilot plant. It was designed to provide the maximum in efficiency of operation and employee comfort, convenience, and safety. T h e laboratory which is airconditioned, includes an excellent library. T h e Center is equipped with the latest scientific apparatus and provides effective facilities for every type of research undertaken by the staff. The Research Center currently houses 275 people including 150 graduate scientists. The staff is headed by the Research and Development Vice President who is responsible for overall policy, and by the Research and Development Director who administers the day-by-day activities of the division. There are four operating departments supervised by assistant research directors. The staff includes men and women with training in biochemistry, chemical engineering, bacteriology, physics, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physiology, physical chemistry, perfuming, pharmacology, food chemistry, nutrition, dentistry, and histology. These scientists seek solutions to many problems in the physical, organic, biological, and analytical chemistry of silicates, phosphates, glycerides, surface active agents, fluorescent dyes, fatty acids, antibacterial agents, essential oils, and other materials used in the formulation of Lever products. The complex processing of detergents, shortenings, margarines, toilet goods, and organic compounds presents continuing opportunities for engineering graduates to meet many professional challenges. The pattern of organization and nature of the company's products permits the individual to participate in a variety of activities in his or her chosen scientific field, Team-work is an integral part of Lever research.
