The automatic fluorescent x-ray spectrometer type XZ 1030 is being completely transistorized. The instru ment is used in the primary metals in dustry for rapid analysis of all elements from magnesium to plutonium. A typical six-element analysis can be made in less than two minutes. BairdAtomic, Inc., has signed an exclusive license agreement with Elliott Quality Automation Ltd., London, England, to produce and market the instrument in North America. Taylor's BI-THERM Thermometers

®

redesigned for accuracy & convenience

For measuring temperatures in pipe lines, hot water tanks, storage tanks and many other industrial, institutional or laboratory applications, Taylor BiT H E R M Dial T h e r m o m e t e r s have been redesigned for easier, m o r e convenient reading. The pointer o n the new model is recessed to be on the same level with the scale. T h i s eliminates e r r o r s due to parallax when reading from an oblique angle. Crystals snap out easily for zero settings o r field replacement, yet seal tightly against water and vapor. All exterior parts are stainless steel. T h e new BiTHERM T h e r m o m e t e r s are available in a variety of stem lengths from 4 to 24 inches and nine temperature ranges between minus 40 and plus 1000. For detailed information, see your Taylor Field Engineer o r write for Bulletin 98267. Taylor Instrument Companies, Rochester, Ν . Υ. o r T o r o n t o , O ntario.

ANAIYTICAL CHEMISTRY

FIRST

The EPR spectrometer shown operates at 35 Gc and can detect 5 χ ΙΟ 9 Δ Η electron spins with a one-second in tegration time at room temperature. This increased sensitivity is the result of the higher operating frequency and the extensive use of high-quality microwave components and advanced microwave circuit designs. The sys tem is particularly advantageous for studies of small samples such as minute single crystals and biological samples. The higher magnetic fields corresponding to the higher operating frequency will enhance studies of ma terials with large internal interac tions. Examples in this class are the oxygen molecules, most of the transi tion elements, and triplet states of organic molecules. Varian Associ ates, 611 Hansen Way, Palo Alto, Calif. 421 Unbreakable Pipets Unbreakable polypropylene pipets with permanently fused-on graduations are chip-proof and shatterproof. They will not break when dropped or acci dentally struck against a hard surface, and they may be autoclaved repeatedly without damage. The pipets are re sistant to virtually all chemicals. They are available in transfer, serological, and measuring styles, in 1-, 2-, 5-, and 10-ml. sizes. The Nalge Co., 75 Pan orama Creek Drive, Rochester, Ν. Υ. 14625. 422
