METER. Operator sets up Analytical Measurements' Model 30 pH meter in waste treatment plant for recording final effluent pH. The new unit is the first to combine battery power with recording capability
NiCd Battery Powers pH Meter-Recorder Unit combines strip-chart recorder, solid-state circuitry, and rechargeable battery power A pH meter that combines solid-state circuitry, a.c.-line or rechargeable-bat tery power, and a strip-chart recorder has been developed by Analytical Measurements, Inc., Princeton, N.J. The Model 30 unit is designed for re cording pH in rivers, process systems, and municipal and industrial effluents. The battery-powered Model 30 costs $395, including a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery. This bat tery, Analytical Measurements points out, will power the recorder for 48 hr., requires 10 hr. for recharging, and, when connected to an a.c. source, will recharge and operate the recorder at the same time. A nonspillable leadacid battery that powers the recorder for two weeks is also available from the company at extra cost. For operation up to a month, any 6volt automobile battery can be used. Alternate use of two of these batteries permits continuous monitoring of pH. The chart paper used in the recorder
is specially treated and needs only pressure from the needle to record. The Model 30 also comes in an a.c, line-operated version priced at $365. This unit shows time, when recording pH data, to accuracies consistent with line frequency standards, according to Analytical Measurements. It also has high zero stability. This, the com pany says, means that an expanded scale can be used for recording small changes in pH. In addition, the line-operated ver sion is available with control contacts for operating external equipment. These contacts make it possible to use the unit as a pH controller or as an alarm system. Controller sensitivity is ±0.05. Both the battery- and line-operated versions can be used with automatic temperature compensators, indicating meters, and grounding connections to eliminate the effects of stray electrical fields.
