use in making heavy-duty tires for trucks, busses, and even military vehicles, has been developed by the Research Department of The Mathieson Alkali Works, it was revealed April 26 by G. W. Dolan, president. Its outstanding characteristic is that, unlike GR-S. formerly known as Buna S, which constitutes most of the rubber thus far produced in this country, the Mathieson rubber withstands elevated temperatures. Reports of independent laboratory tests show that the Mathieson rubber has greater resistance to heat, moisture, oil, and kerosene than GR-S, and less permeability to gases. In certain of these respects, the laboratory tests indicate superiority to natural rubber as well. It is made of butadiene and a new chemical produced from readily available raw materials, and its cost is expected to be about the same as that for GR-S on the same scale of manufacture.

Anticorrosion Films Glyco Products Co., Inc., 26 Court St., Brooklyn 2, N. Y., manufacturers of Sublan. claims that films to prevent the corrosion of steel may be made by diluting this new product with equal parts of mineral oil. Highly polished steel surfaces passed a 1.20O hour test in 90 to 95% relative humidity "wet saturated", with condensate forming continuously on the surface, with no evidence of rust. The coating also passed tests against hydrobromic and salt water. Nylon will aid in spring planting by American farmers this year. As tough bristle, it enters a new field in food producing, brushes being installed o n mechanical seed spreaders to assure uniform planting.

Use by Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp., Toledo, Ohio, of an improved thermosetting plastic binder, employed to bond glass fibers, has made it possible to provide a rigid hull insulating board for Navy and Maritime Commission vessels, which, with a density of only 7.75 pounds to the cubic foot, will save u p to 2,700 pounds in the over-all weight of larger vessels of the Navy's landing craft type. An accompanying increase in the manufacturer's output of fibrous glass textiles has made glass cloth available for facing the hull insulating board. Experience during the present war has emphasized the importance of employing fire-resistant materials in construction of both combat and merchant vessels.

A patent on a new type of resilient mounting utilizing rubber or rubberlike materials has been granted Herbert H. Fink, engineer, B. F. Goodrich Co., and assigned to the company. Mountings covered by the new invention have cylinders of rubber or rubberlike materials interconnected by arms in S-fashion. This arrangement permits an extremely soft suspension under light load and allows the resilient material freedom of movement in all directions. Handling of a variety of stresses including shear, bending, torsional, or twisting is accomplished by the mounting, which also permits the material to be stressed simultaneously under both shear and tension.
Benzene Sulfonamide Benzene sulfonamide, until recently one of many old organic compounds having "undiscovered commercial potential", has been found useful in synthetic work. According to 'Wyandotte Chemicals Corp., Wyandotte, Mich., it reacts readily with aqueous alkalies to give reactive salts, exhibits many of the typical reactions of amines, and is quite stable. Limited laboratory and commercial quantities of technical and purified benzene sulfonamide are available. The corporation is ready to cooperate in any investigations made into i t s properties and applications, and will gladly furnish samples upon request.
Plating Solutions Through an extended laboratory investigation several lead solutions have been developed by Hanson-Van Winkle-Miinning Co., Matawan, N. J., for protecting iron and steel against corrosion and obtaining a corrosion-resisting coating on nonferrous metals. B-H solution is designed especially for leadplating bearing surfaces. It produces deposits with the proper microstructure for indium plating and heat treatment. An alkaline zinc solution is used with S-B addition agent for producing satin-bright to bright deposits, the degree of luster depending upon choice of operating conditions.

Aircraft Putty A flexible, hugh-adhesion aircraft putty had been developed by Du Pont for filling dents and cracks between t h e riveted aluminum sheets o f aircraft wings. This is said to be an important step toward the irreducible mini mum o f "skin friction". So important is wing-surface smoothness in fast fighter planes that rough coats of camouflage paint have been skied, and it has been seriously suggested that t h e win^s be wiped free of dust and other small particles by service crews before each take-ofif. Now available only for war uses, the D u Pont aircraft putty is expected to have postwar values for such applications as the finishing of rough metal castings and rail road coaches.
