Today n e w materials eclipse many o f the old familiar o n e s that once were thought indispensable. Synthetic rubbers, for example, replace natural rubber i n scores o f familiar products. Yet the future o f synthetic rubbers i n many important applications—tires, for example—is still a matter that only can b e seen n o w "as through'a glass .darkly/' Success depends not only o n progress i n synthetics themselves but also o n the development o f n e w and better processing materials.
