Industrial Notes N e w Foxboro D y e Tub Control The Foxboro Co., Foxboro, Mass., has recently completed a new dye tub control system which fits the modern, trend in piece dyeing. This control ler takes the preheated d y e w a t e r being de livered t o the machines, raises it to the exact temperature n e e d e d , and holds it at this tem perature for a definite time predetermined b y the dyer. W h e n t h e time is up the instru m e n t s h u t s off the steam and turns on a signal light. I n a d d i t i o n to t h e t e m p e r a t u r e control unit, the instrument is equipped with a time scale and a movable index, which is set b y t h e o p e r a t o r to the point representing the total time for the d y e o p e r a t i o n . If more time is required, the index is set for the in crease in time, and t h e steam is automatically turned on, the light is extinguished, and t h e process continues. The operator a l w a y s h a s b e f o r e him as a guide a complete record of e a c h operation in time and temperature, Foxboro Dye Tub Control giving unlimited possi bilities for matching shades. T h e unit is furnished complete, as shown i n the illustration, mounted on an ebony asbestos panel with lamp bracket and accessories. Unique Office of Nirosta Steel An office, decorated and fitted throughout in the same metal t h a t gleams from t h e tower of t h e lofty Chrysler Building, has been added t o New York's list of novelties. This office located on the twenty-sixth floor of the N e w

Vol. 8, No. 17

York Central Building, is creating something of a sensation among those interested in the possibilities of the n e w alloy. I n a display room is a n exhibit of products produced from Nirosta steel ranging from a coil of wire having a diameter of less than half that of a human hair, t o a huge chemical tank capable of handling boiling acids without material deterioration. The room itself is paneled with Nirosta sheets that have been ground to a satin finish around the borders with a raised polished center. The decorative design has been etched into the metal and the furniture and exhibits include examples of t h i s alloy in cast, rolled, drawn, spun, welded, wire, etched, a n d riveted form. The product today has found its way into leading industries. A large tonnage has been used in the oil industry. Some of the other industries using it which are represented in the exhibits are the automotive, chemical, paper, architectural, food, marine, and aviation. There are 48 American steel manufacturers of prominence now licensed to produce this material. The office and display room is maintained for these licensees by the Krupp NTirosta Co., Inc. New Photo Flash Lamp A fireless, smokeless, odorless, and noiseless photographic flash lamp has been developed b y the incandescent lamp department of the General Electric Co., Cleveland, Ohio. T h e flash is confined entirely within a bulb, with resulting advantages that are expected to revolu tionize flashlight photog raphy. Requiring only o n e - h u n d r e d t h of a second to act, and being without hazard, i t will lBwwsyBMIClEli!tiiTOËi~rty^^3CT£TÎlB8Î^f^roTB make possible the taking of flashlight photographs in places heretofore pract i c a l l y impossible to "shoot," s u c h a s in trains, airships, and the aters, under water, and by insurance companies requiring night photo graphs under all weather conditions. The lamp consists of a clear bulb of standard design, with the flash light f i l a m e n t coated with a special prepara tion, and with a quantity of very thin aluminum foil in crumpled sheet form within the bulb. The bulb is oxygen-filled. When the circuit is closed the filament is lighted and this, in turn, New Photographic Flash-Xamp Bulb before lights the foil. The lamp Use. Close-Up View operates on any 115-volt house supply, or with dry, storage, or flashlight batteries. A new lamp is needed for each flash. T h e lamp i s m o s t efficient when used with suitable reflector equipment.

Specific Gravity Deterrnination In the absence of a suitably graduated hydrometer, an ordi nary U-tube manometer may be used to show the specific gravity of liquids, according t o information from the Meriam Co., Cleveland, Ohio. "With both ends of t h e "U-tube open to the air, pour a small quantity of the liquid whose specific gravity is to be measured into one arm of the tube, a n d the standard liquid with which i t is to be compared into the other, using water as the standard of comparison when practicable. The two liquids will establish a balance, t h e difference b e t w e e n the two levels being proportionate t o the difference i n their specific gravities. The method depends only on gravity, a n d is not affected by the quantity of liquid used, internal diameter, or length of the tube, or other factors likely t o be met in a shop test. Where there is a tendency for t h e two liquids t o mix, a double test must b e made, using a third liquid which does not mix with either of the others. Methyl Chloride for Refrigeration The Roessler & Hasslacher Chemical Co., Niagara Falls, Ν. Υ., has announced changes in name affecting its grades of methyl chloride containing acrolein. T h e company now offers Artie (straight methyl chloride), Artie Ν (methyl chloride -with added leak detector), methyl chloride A (with warning agent), and methyl chloride A N (with warning a g e n t and leak detector). Acrolein is used a s warning agent and methyl nitrite as leak detector.
