Defense Education Act has been an nounced by Lawrence G. Derthick, U. S. Commissioner of Education. The approved programs, involving 136 graduate schools, are designed to in crease the supply of college teachers and to expand graduate facilities. The programs were selected from 918 proposals submitted by 155 insti tutions which requested 5370 fellow ships. A 12-member advisory com mittee of educators from colleges and universities and a panel of five con sultants from graduate schools reviewed all proposals and made recommenda tions to the commissioner. All ap proved programs lead to the doctoral degree and, as required by the Act, either establish new or expand existing graduate facilities. Participating schools will receive up to $2500 per year for the cost of edu cating each Fellow. The Fellow will receive $2000 for the first year, $2200 for the second, and $2400 for the third, with an allowance of $400 for each de pendent.

Fisk Announces Annual Spectroscopy Institute The 11th annual Fisk University In frared Spectroscopy Institute will be held at Fisk University, Nashville, Tenn., from August 3 to 12. This year's Institute is to be divided into two sec tions. The first section, going from August 3 to 6, will consist of an intro duction to infrared spectroscopy, deal ing with elementary theory and experi mental techniques. This is designed particularly for beginners. The second section will run from August 8 to 12. This will cover interpretation of infra red spectra and recent developments in infrared techniques. It is designed for beginners who have completed the pre ceding 4-day program, and for others who have some previous background in infrared spectroscopy. The tuition charges for the first ses sion will be $80, while for the second session the charges are $100. Partici pants may attend either one or both sessions. Scholarship aid is available to academic personnel. Enrollment to both sessions is limited in number. Further information may be obtained from Nelson Fuson, Director, Fisk In frared Institute, Fisk University, Nash ville, Tenn.
