MATERIALS High Purity Amines Addition of seven high purity amines to its line of research and development chemicals has been announced by Ames Laboratories, Inc. The compounds are Λ"1, A'i-dimethyl-l^-propanediamine, ofluorobenzylamine, ?n-fluorobenzylamine, p-fluorobenzylamine, 1-naphthalene methylamine, n-octylamine, and A'-(n-propyl) ethylenediamine. Also available, in drum lots, is isomerically pure isoamylamine. C-l Premixed Liquid Scintillator A premixed liquid scintillator con centrate, said to eliminate weighing and stirring in the laboratory, has been in troduced by Pilot Chemicals, Inc. The material, called Liquifluor, is a 25X concentrate of PPO and POPOP in specially purified toluene, which is sim ply added by the user to the desired solvent. It can be used in any liquid scintillation system containing toluene and in any dilution desired. Each liter of the concentrate contains 100 grams of PPO and 1.25 grams of POPOP, and the material is available in 1-liter and 500-ml. bottles. C-2 High Purity Silver Commercial availability of silver of 99.999% purity is announced by Engel hard Industries, Inc. Designated as Grade E-4, the metal is produced in needle form with maximum dimension of one to three millimeters, as well as in ingots weighing about 700 or 500 troy ounces. Ingots of other sizes, fabri cated forms, and vacuum cast bars can also be supplied. All batches of the material are sub jected to spectrographic analysis. The company says that individual lots may show some variation in assay, but a typical determination showed the fol lowing content: copper, 1 p.p.m.; iron, 1.6 p.p.m.; nickel, 1 p.p.m.; mag nesium, 1.4 p.p.m.; calcium, 0.1 p.p.m.; silicon, 1 p.p.m. ; aluminum, less than 0.1 p.p.m.; and platinum, iridium, pal ladium, ruthenium, gold, lead, tin, zinc, antimony, cadmium, and bismuth, un detected. The company will supply a certifi cate of analysis on each lot if desired.

ing Glass Works is said to provide a method for quick and precise calibra tion of recording spectrophotometers for wavelength accuracy. In producing the material, holmium was combined with a special glass that transmits radi ant energy in the ultraviolet region be tween 200 and 300 m^, a region in which most glasses do not transmit. The transmission spectrum of the holmium glass shows a wide range of sharp ab sorption bands well spaced through the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared. It is this constant definitive quality that gives the glass outstanding calibrating characteristics, says the company. C - 4 Oxoid Cellulose Acetate Strips Oxoid cellulose acetate strips in vari ous sizes for use with electrophoresis in struments commonly found in United States laboratories are now available from Consolidated Laboratories, Inc. The company says the material has ad vantages that enable a complete electro-

phoretic run in about 1V 2 hours, with no more serum needed than can be ob tained from a few drops of peripheral blood. It adds that determinations of hemoglobin can be made in one hour. It is said that recent techniques with the strips demonstrate that quantita tion of electrophoretically pure frac tions can be made with as little as 0.05 /xg. of protein or other components of body fluids. C-5 Fatty Acid Derivatives Butyl myristate, butyl palmitate, and butyl stéarate have been added to the line of high purity fatty acid derivatives available from Applied Science Laboratories, Inc. They are offered in 99.8%+ purity, and the company says that they are priced the same as the corresponding methyl esters. The compounds are said to be useful as gas chromatography standards; vapor phase chromatograms are available for all three. C-6
