Letters like to take issue with the letter from Marvin Margoshes which appeared in C&EN, May 17, page 2. I am not sure whether I am fond of the term "chemical dependence" or not; I normally identify myself as a person who is an alcoholic (it was my primary addiction) who was addicted to other chemicals. In any event, I have not used any alcohol or any other psychotropic chemical for over five years. What I call my addiction is merely a matter of semantics as long as I do not drink or use drugs. It's as much as a slur to the drug industry to say that one is a drug abuser as it is to the chemical process industry to say that one is a chemical abuser. Many of my brothers and sisters in Alcoholics Anonymous are not at all sure, in the beginning of their sobriety, where their addictions really are or what they are. I know people who have consumed methanol and other alcohols; have sniffed toluene, ethyl ether, and nitrous oxide; and have consumed a veritable smorgasbord of other drugs and/or chemicals. It is no more the fault of CPI that someone would abuse a chemical than it's the fault of the ethical pharmaceutical manufacturers that someone abuses drugs, or the fault of the automobile manufacturers that someone would get drunk or high and then kill themselves or others with their automobile. More than 40 years ago one of the first

counter about the work in question. Clearly, what really matters is not the quantity of papers or citations, but the quality of the work and its scientific significance and impact. Reviewers should be expected to read and assess publications, not simply to enumerate them. Moreover, judges of productivity should not take a high flux of citations as a reliable assay of the scientific importance of publications. It is well known that review articles, "methods" papers, and papers reporting erroneous findings generally are cited more often than are most scholarly, scientifically sound papers. A mindlessly "objective" formula-based procedure for judging productivity and fundworthiness would be a failure, for it would reward those who publish reviews, procedures, and mistakes over those who have successfully performed and SIR: As suggested by others in C&EN (March 15, page 32; May 24, page 4), I agree that a re- accurately reported original research that advances understanding, however deliberately and searcher's "track record" should be taken into unostentatiously. account in the process of deciding whether, and The bottom line is that decisions about reat what level, her/his research should be funded. search funding, advancement, awards, and the I vigorously disagree with the proposal advanced like require the fair-minded and sagacious exby Joel Tellinghuisen (C&EN, May 24, page 4), ercise of judgment on the part of peer reviewers. however, that the frequency of citations of an Resorting to the easy way out, through the use author's published work be used as a measure of formulas and citation counts, would be an of productivity. unacceptable alternative to the efforts of an inFor decisions about research funding, career formed and critical intellect. advancement, awards, and other issues that John G. American corporations to adopt a formal program to rehabilitate their employees who had problems with alcohol was a major chemical manufacturer and leader in CPI. Since that company's initiative, many American corporations have followed suit. Perhaps the important thing is not what we call this problem, which costs us millions of dollars and thousands of lives every year, but what we are willing to do about it. JoeH.
