Circle 6-2111 On a recent Saturday morning we received an urgent call from a North Carolina customer for an emergency supply of dioctyl azelate plasticizer. For Sunday delivery. Before this weekend call had become an order-on-its-way at 3:00 PM Saturday, it had traveled a circuitous route: first our plant switchboard operator passed it to a helpful Plastics Division Sales Coordinator. He fielded the call to the Chemicals Division Assistant Sales Manager, who relayed it in turn to the Product Manager's wife. There it stopped for a while because her husband had dropped the kids off at the Satur day cowboy movie and had gone on downtown (or so she thought). It took a while before the Product Manager was located in—of all places! —his office. All told, it took twelve phone conversations including a long dis tance call back to the customer, before a local trucking firm notified one of its drivers several hours later of an unscheduled trip to North Carolina. Cargo: ten drums of dioctyl azelate plasticizer. Not bad for a Saturday. The question is, can we do better? From the standpoint of product delivery time, perhaps not. But in converting an emergency request into a consigned order? We think yes. An inventory error.. .unexpected orders.. .the reasons are many and varied, but almost everyone gets caught short occasionally.
