Research and Development Chemists We are seeking chemists for our expanding research activities in the field of photographic chemistry. We have openings in both our research facilities in Cambridge and our production control operations in Waltham, Massachusetts. Currently, our major emphasis is on studies of new compounds related to both black and white and color photographic processes. We are looking for well trained chemists with Bachelor's or Master's degrees and excellent academic records in the fields of organic, physical, analytical or polymer chemistry. We are particularly interested in finding chemists for our ex panding small-scale-production and process-development labora tories. They will work on the synthesis of a wide variety of complex organic chemicals. The scope of this work will extend con siderably beyond t h e laboratory. We are also looking for a P h . D . whose background is in ana lytical and physical chemistry. His work will involve the in vestigation of properties of photographic chemicals and will study their reaction kinetics in photographic and other chemical processes. I n addition to t h e atmosphere of creative encouragement which prevails a t Polaroid Corpora tion, there are many other company benefits including salaries above the community average, a profit-sharing plan, a tuition refund plan, and health and insurance plans. If you have a sound scholastic background in any of the areas de scribed, and preferably some indus trial experience, we would like to hear from you. Please send your resume to Richard T. volumes, two such noteworthy reac tions as the Beekmann Rearrangement and Hofmann Elimination have re mained for discussion. As might be expected, the two chapters devoted to these venerable reactions are the most extensive. That on the Beekmann Re arrangement gives broad coverage of the reaction as applied not only to oximes but also to oxime derivatives and related compounds such as imines, N-halo imines, etc. The scope of the study and discussien of stereochemis try are excellent. The chapter might have been strengthened by a more critical view of the reaction mecha nism, which, for example, would have excluded the reduction of oximes from consideration as a possible variation of the Beekmann Rearrangement. The omission of a comparison from the practical viewpoint with the Schmidt Reaction which provides an alternative path to similar products is, although subject to criticism, not particularly detrimental since this topic is taken up in detail in Volume 3 of the series. The chapter on olefins, the Hofmann Elimination Reaction, is commendable from all viewpoints and especially for the inclusion of less familiar yet useful pyrolyses of amine oxides, amine phos phates, and the decomposition of IV-

tion.

acyl amines catalyzed by phosphorus pentoxide. The remaining chapters which, al though dealing with reactions less ex tensively studied, cover- material which has been and is of noteworthy interest from both theoretical and practical standpoints. A comparison, in the chapter on ring expansions, of alterna tive routes such as expansion with diazomethane would have been wel come. Each of these chapters pro vides valuable and interesting reading to those interested in the theoretical as well as practical side of the reactions. In short, the new editor-in-chief has chosen to publish a worthy addition in the conventional and highly popular pattern already established, rather than indulge in innovation. The se lection of topics and the quality of their presentation are such as to afford the new volume a position of esteem beside the others of the series. Organic Reactions. Vol. XL ARTHUR C.
