industry trends Dow Chemical of Canada, Ltd. has reduced mercury losses from its Sarnia, Ont., chlor-alkali plant to less than 0.5 lb/day. The company had taken emergency action in 1970 to curb mercury discharges which, under Ontario law, must be reduced by this June 1 to 0.005 lb/ton of chlorine produced. Air-Tec, Inc. (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) has been established as an independent consulting and system-testing service. The company will concentrate initially on performance and analysis of field tests on radioactive material removal systems in the nuclear power reactor field. PPG Industries has completed conversion of a steam boiler from coal to natural gas at its glass fabrication plant in Creighton, Pa. Fly ash emissions from three other boilers have been reduced by eliminating fly ash
reinjection. The Creighton plant is PPG’S oldest manufacturing facility, having been built in 1883.
development. The company will use aircraft equipped with a variety of remote sensors.
The Wheelabrator Corp. (Mishawaka, Ind.) has been awarded a $1.4 million contract to supply an air pollution control system for a new 1500 ton/ day incinerator in the District of Columbia. The system will consist of six Wheelabrator-Lurgi precipitators to clean the exhaust gases from six 250 ton/day-capacity furnaces. The units will clean 786,000 cfm at a temperature of 550°F and with a removal efficiency of 9 7 % .
Singmaster & Breyer (New York, N.Y.) has been awarded a contract by the federal Air Pollution Control Office to identify and evaluate atmospheric emissions and their control in the primary aluminum smelting industry. The study will provide APCO with a basis for committing future federal R&D efforts and with an estimate of present and future abatement costs.
Grumman ICorp. (Bethpage, N.Y.) has formed a new subsidiary, called Grumman Ecosystems Corp., to expand its activities in the environmental field. The new subsidiary will provide services for mapping and exploration, environmental planning, pollution analysis and control, and resource
Brand X does a great job proportioning exact amounts of a chemical additive. Brand Y has excellent adjustment a n d control systems. I n fact, there are several really good metering p u m p s available. Unfortunately, just having good p u m p s isn’t good enough. Particular applications require particular pumps. Take the pumping head, for example. Should it be constructed of Acrylic o r of Polyvinyl chloride. Most people don’t k n o w the difference . . . b u t most chemicals do. Then, too, maybe a n electronic p u m p would be better suited than a mechanical pump. H o w about feeding t w o chemicals simultaneously w i t h t h e same p u m p ? Might you add automatic remote controls later o n ? The point is, whatever the application - f r o m a s w i m pool to a municipal waste w a t e r process plant - Precision Control Product can supply a p u m p equal to the job. Moreover, Precision will help you select the p u m p . No obligation. Just ask us.

Chemetron Corp. has started up a waste treatment facility at its Newport, Tenn., chemicals plant. The facility will control acidity and BOD of more than 1 million gpd of liquid effluent. Activated sludge treatment in a 15-million-gallon holding pond reduces the BOD, while 5 to 7 tons/day of lime will be used to raise pH. (continued on page 256)
nmm When New York cut allowable sulfur in fuel to I % , the City’s Dept. of Air Resources had only 44 working days to check out over 350 storage tanks.. .309,000,000 gallons in all! This herculean task was completed by using the LECO Automatic Sulfur Titrator (ASTM 1552), which requires less than 10 minutes per analysis. Samples with sulfur content exceeding the 1 % limit were rechecked by the bomb method (ASTM 129), which increased analysis time to two days. In every single case results agreed! If your pollution control program requires fast, accurate sulfur determinations, look into the LECO 10-minute Automatic Sulfur Determinator for dependable results in minimum time. (continued from page 2 5 5 ) InterconTek Corp. (Syracuse, N.Y.) has expanded into the air pollution control field by acquiring sales rights in the northeastern U.S. for the catalytic combustion processes of Catalytic Products International (Palatine, Ill.). InterconTek has been in the business of abating water pollution from the metal-finishing industries. International Pollution Control, Inc. (Houston, Tex.) has designed a 100,000-gpd pollution abatement system for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. The facility, which is now on stream at L&N’S Radnor yards, treats waste waters from engine washing, engine fueling, and diesel shops. The free oil recovered is sold, while sand and solids also recovered can be landfilled. National Environmental Instruments, Inc. (Fall River, Mass.) has been formed and has signed a long-term agreement with the Bendix Corp. to act as exclusive marketing and sales organization for the Bendix-Unico line of environmental instruments. (Bendix’s Environmental Sciences Division recently purchased all the Unico Environmental product line and the Gelman Air Pollution product line from the Gelman Instrument Co.)

oxy Catalyst Muffler Purifiers are the only way to get fumefree, high-powered lift trucks for a price worth talking about. SO when nausea, headaches, smarting eyes, and other fume problems arise, there’s no need to switch to electrics. Just replace the conventional muffler on your lift truck engine with an OC Muffler-Purifier. You save money three ways. On the higher initial cost of electrics. On the investment in electric charging equipment. And on the downtime costs for lengthy battery charging . The OC Muffler-Purifier snuffs out exhaust fumes from leaded gas, white gas, LPG, or diesel fuel. It’s close to 100% effective.

Allied Chemical Co. has announced that it has developed a new pipeline charging system that has the potential of reducing emissions during charging of coke ovens by as much as 70%. A pilot unit at Allied’s Ironton, Ohio, plant demonstrated much reduced emissions and increased coke production. Allied has formed, together with Salem Corp. (Carnegie, Pa.), a company called Coaltek Associates for the purpose of licensing the new charging method. Nalco Chemical Co. is offering a service for monitoring and objectively reporting industrial plant effluents. The service is also being offered to municipal water and sewage treatment plants, On-site instruments can be rented from Nalco and the company will also conduct river surveys. Such parameters as BOD, TOC, hexane extractables, etc. can be analyzed routinely. The company can also measure heavy metals down to ppb concentrations.
