Such are the optimistic predictions for pushbutton, pressurepackaged windshield deicers. Some 100 brandnames are betting this relatively simple, low-cost product will live up to full expectations. One reason, deicers are multiple-use items . . . can be used to free frozen locks, cut window fogging and sometimes to improve tire traction. The usual deicer consists of approximately 20% by weight ethylene or propylene glycol, 60% isopropyl alcohol and 20% propellant, with small quantities of surface-active agents and sometimes perfume. The glycol is used to achieve the proper 110

evaporation rate and viscosity-freezing point relationship in the deicer formulation. FUNCTION OF GLYCOLS IN WINDSHIELD DEICERS To a degree, windshield deicers serve to inhibit or prevent ice formation; but their primary function is to dissolve existing layers of ice. On contact, the glycolisopropanol forms an aqueous solution with the outer ice layer and lowers its freezing point. This solution then progressively softens lower layers of ice until easilyremoved slush is formed. Isopropanol alone would evap orate too fast to have any residual effect, and this action might also accelerate refreezing because of evaporative cooling of the surface. Ethylene or propylene glycol evaporates more slowly. However, glycols alone would be too viscous for this application; thus appropriate mix tures of these freezing point depressants with alcohol are used.

Both are used exten sively in aerosol antiperspirants, spray shampoos, and dermatologicals such as athlete's foot spray . . . they serve both as a solvent and emollient in sun tan and burn preparations. Other desired charac teristics of the glycols in aerosol applications are their high boiling points and low evaporation rates.
