Less water minimizes the development of undesirable polyglycol-type by products. Lower aldehyde contents improve product color—minimize the formation of ester-type derivatives. Lowered acidity in many instances provides increased reaction rates. Less non-volatile residue reduces haze effects. Lower chlorides result in better catalyst activity and less product color. Nil acetylene permits better reaction performance and adds a safety factor.
