Alnico magnet over a wide range of stirring speeds. A graduated dial on the control rheostat permits reproduc tion of stirring rates. T h e 750-watt, ring-type heater is completely enclosed. I t clamps t o the underside of a n 8-inch removable alu minum top and can be replaced readily if necessary. Heating up to 700° F . is controlled b y a continuously variable thermostat. Over-all height of t h e unit is 8V2 inches; weight is 14\/2 pounds. 9 Test Tube Heater A heater t h a t can handle u p to 75 test tubes a t constant temperature is available from Hallikainen Instruments. I t can be used to maintain temperatures between 25° and 300° C. within 1%. « | T h e a p p a r a t u s is claimed to have ad vantages over water baths, oil baths, sand baths, or flame for providing con trolled temperatures. Overheating can be avoided and the thermostatic con trol permits temperature t o be main tained just a few degrees below t h e boil ing point of a reaction mixture, therebyreducing danger of loss through b u m p ing or volatilization.
