NEW CHEMICALS AND SPECIALTIES Lead Naphthenate A grease-grade lead naphthenate is being manufactured by Witco Chemical Co. in two metal concentrations, 3 0 and 3 3 % , for applications in lead-grease lubricants and its effectiveness rests on its solubility and stability in lubricating oils and greases, its anticorrosive properties, and its enhancing of film strength, oiliness, and antiseize characteristics. Solubility in mineral oils is good over a wide range of viscosities, and protection of iron, steel, and other metals is good against moisture, mild acids, and similar corrosives, says Witco. By itself, the lead naphthenate exhibits moderate extreme pressure properties, and, when used in combination with special extreme pressure additives, does not detract from the lubricant properties of the finished compound. In a typical lubricating oil of 120SSU at 210° F., a 7.5% concentration gives a Tirriken test of 9250 lb./sq. in. equivalent at 32 lb. maximum beam load. CS 1

Resorcinol-Phenol Adhesive A low-cost resorcin-phenol adhesive which meets military specification MIL-A379A (formerly J A N - A - 3 9 7 ) , has been developed by the Borden C o / s - chemical division. The adhesive is called Casophen L T - 6 8 and is #an improved modification of Casophen LT-67. The latter was a boilproof glue that could be cured at intermediate temperatures. It was brought out by Borden in 1942. The big advantage of L T - 6 8 over its predecessor is that it can be stored for a full year without sacrificing any of its working properties or the quality of the bond. LT-67 had a storage life of six weeks. Casophen L T - 6 8 will enable manufacturers of defense materials to stretch hardto-get resorcin supplies, since the glue contains less than 2 0 % of this ingredient. The bond is resistant to boiling and outdoor exposures. Although LT-68 was designed as a type II adhesive (for intermediate temperature setting), it also meets the requirements for type I (room temperature setting). CS 2

Synthetic Rubber Latices The introduction of four n e w synthetic rubber latices, each tailored to meet specific requirements, has been announced by the chemical division of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. The n e w additions to Goodyear's line of Chemigum latices are described as aqueous dispersions of butadiene—acrylonitrile copolymers designed particularly for use in coating, impregnating, and compounding applications requiring un-

In the 2 3 5 series, Chemigum 235AHS, 235C, 2 3 5 C H S have been added to expand possible applications. It is explained that the 235 series is characterized b y a butadiene to acrylonitrile ratio of 5 5 to 45. Chemigum latex 245AHS has been adcled to the 2 4 5 series, characterized by a butadiene to acrylonitrile ratio of 6 7 to 33. The alphabetical designations witjhin each series refer to the type of stabilization. In the 235 series, 235AHS is a high solids modification of the 235A and. is stabilized with an ammonia soap. Chemigum 2 3 5 C and 235CHS contain a synthetic anionic stabilizer to ensure stability in processes which tend to increase the hydrogen ion concentration of the latex. A typical use is in saturating processes where the impregnant is deposited by repeated passes of a w e b through the bath without coagulation of the la.tex. Continuous contact with the acid salts in most cellulose fibers will precipitate the solids of ordinary latex. Chemigum latex 235CHS is a high solids modification, of 235C. Within the 245 series, 245A now has a high solids counterpart in Chemigum latex 245AHS. The high solids latices give a greater solids pick u p in some processes and are more economical to ship and store. CS 3

Paint Defoamer A defoamer for synthetic rubber latex, water-base emulsion paints has been developed by El Dorado Oil Works. Referred to as defoamer E D , it is a brown viscous material consisting essentially of a mixture of high molecular weight esters and incorporated particles, which are resuspended immediately before dispersing the defoamer in paint. According to the manufacturer, concentrations as low as 0.1% of the defoatmer in paint have produced satisfactory results on a plant scale. The defoamer itself is claimed to b e completely stable and require no particular care on storage. The company reports that no adverse eflEects in paint stability have been observed in storage tests over a period of three months. OS 4

Insulating M a t e r i a l A fibrous insulating material which will not blister or wrinkle when covered -with hot sealing compounds has been developed b y Rogers Corp. Produced especially for use as an insulating liner inside c o m pletely sealed electrical components, the C H E M I C A L

n e w material, Diaroid 705, features high dielectric strength and is supplied in sheet or fabricated form. First application of the material has b e e n in fluorescent ballasts. In this application, the (material is covered with asphalt heated to 225° C. T h e improved insulation provided by Duroid 705 permitted the manufacturer to use a single insulating part instead of the two-piece assembly previously employed. CS 5

Spot Repellent Finish M a n d e e Fabrics, Inc., has announced a n e w spot and water repellent finish to be known as Manduro Plus Resist-ASpot. This new finish has satisfactorily undergone severe tests during the past yeaT o n various constructions. In addition to the ability of Resist-A-Spot to resist practically any non-oily food or beverage spots and stains, it also resists perspiration stains and is water repellent. Contained in the finish is a high degree of crease resistance as well. CS 6

P R O D U C T MOTES Dishwashing Compound. "J" Chemical Works has purchased from Mathieson Chemical Corp. the rights t o manufacture and produce a cleanser designed for use in mechanical dishwashing machines. The formula, which has been improved, includes six different sanitizing chemicals fused together and cast into molded briquets. W h e n placed in a dispenser through which water from the wash spray flows, the briquet slowly dissolves at a uniform rate, feeding the w a s h water the exact degree of cleansing strength at all times. CS 7 Aureomycin-lmpregnated Gauze. Davis & Geek, Inc., has announced development of gauze bandage and surgical packing that is impregnated with aureomycin in an ointment base. T h e company foresees that the greatest use of the bandage will be in treating serious infected burns or the prevention of infection in minor burns. CS 8 Phenolic C o r e Material. A phenolic foam core material w i t h high compressive strength, up to 500 l b . / s q . in., is announced by Rezolin, Inc. Called Corfoam, it will foam to a hard consistency without applied heat at room temperature. I t is of honeycomb appearance with tiny clobular nonconnecting cells and has a density of 14 l b . / c u . ft. CS 9 N e w Vitamin Capsule. T h e release of B complex-12 a n e w vitamin capsule providing a complete source of the 3 complex vitamins, including vitamin Bia and folic acid for oral administration, has been announced by E . R. Squibb & Sons. B complex-12 is intended as a complete and effective dietary supplement providing prophylactic amounts of essential B complex factors for -the prevention of B vitamin deficiencies.
