ACCELERATOR IRRADIATES COATINGS, CURES T H E M I N SECONDS Although radiation curing has been known for some time, only recently has commercially available equipment for production curing become available. T h e manufacturers of the Dynacote curing system believe that it is now possible for production curing to acquire a major foothold in the coatings industry that last year consumed 350 million gallons of coatings-solvents materials. T h e Dynacote is a small particle accelerator of 300 k.e.v. capacity that may be combined with a variety of conveying systems to cure instantly a variety of coatings applied to nearly any shape of substrate. Dynacote cuts curing times from hours to seconds and is claimed to make obsolete conventional solvent methods for applying coatings to metal, wood, paper, fabrics, plastics, and ceramics. In addition to the time saved during the curing operation, the new irradiation system eliminates the solvents and solvent recovery equipment, permits use of less costly monomers, and eliminates need for heat-curing ovens and space formerly devoted to equipment and storage. Of special interest is the potential for inducing new properties in coatings via irradiation. It is possible to coat an object with a paste in which a texture or design is created, and then “freeze” the texture by rapid curing. Such a coating would provide a decorative exterior and increase the strength of the underlying substrate. Dynacote systems do not require lengthy warm-up periods. T h e total turn-on time is less than 60 seconds and 95% on-stream dependability can be guaranteed. Complete maintenance and shutdown is accomplished within a three-day
period once a year. Operator training requires one working day. In trials, the Dynacote system has been successfully tried on five monomer systems: styrenated polyesters, PVC plastisols, epoxy acrylics, plastisols with styrenated polyesters, and acrylic monomers. In each case, the clue to radiation curing is an unsaturated coating material which can be guaranteed by incorporating an unsaturated monomer. For most applications the accelerator configuration shown in the photograph below is the most satisfactory. However, more intricate shapes may require additional
horns. Reliable shielding is no problem and no hazard exists when the equipment is properly installed. High voltage activates a thoriated tungsten filament which emits a stream of electrons focused by a Pierce lens, and then accelerates to 300 kv. in a re-entrant beam tube. T h e acceleration tube is under vacuum; the head itself is insulated with SF-6. After presetting voltage and current, the operator simply pushes the “start” button and the unit is operational.
