L o w A l l o y Steel Standards ... 7 Bight standards representative of the low alloy steel range, now available from the Bureau of Analysed Samples, Ltd., may be used for routine and research spectrographs analysis. The standards are available in the form of 0.5-inch diameter rods and are intended to cover a range of up to 5 % of the more usual alloying elements in steel (Si, Mn, Ni, Cr, Mo, V, and Cu), the iron content of each standard being approximately 94.5%. The steels are also available in the form of fine turnings as standards for photometric methods of analysis, as an alternative to stand ardization by means of pure metals. The turnings for photo metric standardization are supplied in a scries of eight bottles each containing 25, 50, or 100 grams.

Finished-Print Recording Camera

oscilloscope consists of eight independent channels, each of which contains a single-gun cathode ray tube and eight a.c. amplifiers with a deflection sensitivity of 10 mv. per inch. Frequency re sponse is 20 to 25,000 cycles per second ± 2 0 % or 20 to 150,000 cycles per second ± 3 0 % . The only factors common to all the channels are intensification of the cathode ray tubes and timing marker injection. Signals are displayed on a horizontal axis for photographing on a film strip or drum with vertical travel. Power supply is independent of the indicator unit.

Automatic On-Off Flame

Λ new oscillograph-reeord camera recently announced by the Instrument Division of Allen B. Du Mont Laboratories, Inc.. provides in 1 minute a complete record of an oscillograph image. The camera is designed specifically for application with any standard, 5-inch cathode-ray oscillograph. The camera employs the Polaroid-Land process for delivering a finished print at the termination of each completed exposure or set of exposures. The lens aperture is//2.8, and the lens is coated to minimize halation. Shutter settings are Vioo, Vso, V25, time, and bulb. Size of print is 2.25 X 3.25 inches, with a ratio of dimensions from trace to re cording of 2.25 to 1. By means of a sliding mount, the camera may be positioned so t h a t several traces can be recorded on a single print for side-by-side comparison.

Thermocouple Vacuum Gages

... 3

A redesigned set of thermocouple vacuum gages for industrial, laboratory, and other applications where vacuum must be measured accurately has been an nounced by General Elec tric's Meter and Instru ment Divisions. Included are a 115-volt, a . c , portable thermocouple vacuum gage and types for both rack and panel mounting. All but the rack-mounted type have been de signed to operate either from 115-volt a.c. or from No. 2 flashlight batteries. Usable on either glass or metal vacuum systems, the gages give a continuous indication of pressure. Pressures can be read directly from a scale calibrated from 0 to 200 microns. In the l-to-100 micron range, the instruments are accurate within 10% of the r-eading or 1 micron, whichever is greater. The gage is connected to the gage tube electrically. Hence, it may be dis connected from the tube without disturbing the vacuum system. The gage is built to withstand damage if accidentally operated at atmospheric pressure.

Tumbler-Mixer

... 6

Arthur S. La Pine and Co. offers the Laneo tumblermixer for tumbling solids and mixing liquids. The device can be tilted through a 90° arc for mixing a t any angle. I t includes a drive belt in constant tension re gardless of load and will hold any size container, from 5-gallon cans to 1-ounce bottles, square, round, or irregular. I t is portable or may be bolted down if desired. I t re quires 32 X 19 inches of floor space, and when fully raised, its height from the floor is 35 inches. The tumbler-mixer is driven by a y 6 -hp. motor operated on single-phase, 110-volt alternating current.

To answer the seismographic needs of a governmental agency, the Electronic Tube Corp. has just developed a new eight-channel oscilloscope. Through the higher frequency response made possible by this instrument, users will be able to learn more about the characteristics of the earth than was formerly possible with a magnetic seismograph. An automatic Bunsen burner which flames only when needed, by touch con trol, is now being manufac tured by Hanau Engineer ing Co. Named Touch-OMatic, the burner produces a full, regulated flame as hand or finger touches the on-off platform. Instantly, as hand is removed, the flame automatically goes out leaving only a low burning pilot. For a continuous flame, the platform is depressed and turned slightly. When this is reversed, the flame goes out. By flaming only when needed, the fire haz ards of the traditional burner are substantially reduced, the manufacturer states. The use of the on-off platform as a com fortable work-height hand rest, while heating objects over the flame, eliminates fatigue, as opposed to the conventional practice of holding the object in mid-air. A draft guard, which may be rotated in any direction, shields the pilot and keeps the main flame burning steadily. Touch-OMatic has adjustable air intake and gas valves for natural, manu factured, mixed, or bottled gas. Standard rubber tubing from l /t to Vis inch inside diameter is accommodated by a serrated inlet connection.

from M. C. Miller. I t is small, compact, and low-priced, as com pared to the previous model, No. 5, although it has a low range of 2 millivolts and special mirror scales 3.9 inches long. Its accuracy is 1%. By use of a circuit selector switch, the two high-sensi tivity d.c. units can be connected into a variety of measuring circuits for the determination of potentials, current, resistance, and soil resistivity. Internal batteries with coarse a n d fine controls can be used t o supply and control current for tost pur poses. The voltmeters or voltmeter and ammeter can be used separately or simultaneously. Polarity-reversing switches are provided for both current and potential measurements.

Tilter for Stainless Steel Barrels

Cellulose tape, printed in vivid colors with the words "poison," "corrosive," and "'flammable," is now available in roll form, to gether with a heavy cast dispenser. Offered by t h e Fisher Scientific Co., the tape is recommended as a safety precaution for marking packages and reagent bottles. The tape is 0.5 inch wide, and each printed portion when cut off b y t h e serrated edge is about 3.5 inches long. There are three rolls t o a dispenser, each roll providing approximately 200 labels.

Roentgen Meter

...10

A radioactivity-measuring instrument, the universal roent gen meter, is now being produced b y Westiiighousc Electric Corp. The meter is equipped with cither 4, 5, or 6 multiple scales which make possible fine readings in all ranges of radiation. T h e 4-scale model co\'ers 4 ranges of radiation: 0 to 0.5 millirocntgen, 0 to 5, 0 to 50, and 0 to 500. The setting of a switch determines which of t h e multiple scales will operate and be visible, thus eliminating incorrect readings through the use of the wrong scale. The manufacturer states t h a t the instrument is sensitive enough for use in x-ray work and is also capable of accurately measuring the large amounts of radiation encountered in atomic fission research.

A safety tilter announced by General Scientific Equipment Co. provides a safe, convenient method for draining acids and other liquids from stainless steel barrels. T h e cradle and supporting base are made of structural steel, arid all members are riveted or welded to ensure a strong, durable unit. T h e locking device permits the tilter to be positively held a t a n y angle for pouring, so t h a t the whole operation can be performed b y a single person. The safety air vent pouring spout ensures an even How of liquid without spurts or splashes. This is made of acidresistant rubber and plastic tubing for long wear. Flow capacity is 5 gallons per minute. T h e long handle operates the tilter easily and permits the operator to remain a t a safe distance from the liquid.
