PRODUCTION

A V*-in. ball valve, recommended for working pressures up to 3000 lb./sq. in. is being made b y the Foxboro Co. for liquid, gas, and steam service. Tight, positive shutoff is provided by a stainless steel ball which closes into a machined, conical seat. The ball, retained at the end of the stem, is free-rolling so that every closing brings a new surface into contact with the valve seat. The long-stroke stem and the packing gland are made of stainless steel; the packing is a preformed, graphited asbestos with a plastic binder. Straight-through and angle types are available with two and four connections. Ε 1

Electrically-Heated Valves Okadee Co. is making electricallyheated valves. Designed to keep valve mechanisms clear of frost and ice in liquid carbon dioxide lines at .temperatures as low as —110° F . , the company says they can also be used on hot, cold, and viscous liquid and gas lines. Heat from the ele ments is transmitted directly to the valve seats, heating the entire flow opening and the operating mechanism. Sizes from 2 in. to 6 in. are available, with pneumatic, hydraulic, solenoid, or manual control. Heating elements range from 400 to 3 0 0 0 watts per unit. Ε 2

on p a g e 2443 sleeve bearings may be obtained if d e sired. Stuffing boxes may be packed solid or arranged for injection or circulation. The Cameron Shaft-Seal may be installed in these pumps where difficult liquids a r e encountered. Water-cooled stuffing boxes are standard on pumps with steel casings and can be provided with cast-iron c o n struction. Ε 4

Detector f o r Turbulent Flames The Phillips 66 Flamometer is avail able from Phillips Petroleum Co. This i n strument is designed to detect, amplify, and indicate electrical signals in the audio frequency range, generated b y turbulent flames. Experimental as yet, Phillips says it is expected to b e an excellent tool fqr locating flame zones and boundaries. . It consists of a detecting probe (ceramic tip supported by a metal rod ) and an elec trical circuit. No significant signal is registered unless the probe is in an actual flame zone which is both ionized a n d turbulent. Response time is of the order of a millisecond. Signal detection is n o t materially affected by the temperature of the detecting tip.

Programming Control Fireye programming control Type 26RJ8 is designed to provide automatic starting and programming control for commercial and industrial gas, oil, and combination gas/oil burner equipment. It is used with t h e Firetron scanner Type 48PT1 to protect burner installations from the hazard of flame failure, with complete fuel cut-off in 2 to 4 sec. The control automatically starts a burner in operation and programs a sequence of pre-purge, ignition-on, fuel valve delay, post-ignition timing, and post-purge. Ε 3

The amplifier output can b e read from the meter on the Flamometer instrument panel; the output can drive a 0.1-ma. p e n recorder; the signal can be followed on an oscilloscope; or output can be used to ac tuate relays or a servo-mechanism. Ε 5

Magnetic Flowmeter

A magnetic flowmeter, for the remote measurement of molten-metal flow, is being made by the special products sec tion of General Electric. Molten metal flowing through the pipe cuts magnetic lines of flux, generating a small directional voltage in the pipe pro portional to the amount of magnetic flux and the rate of metal flow. Voltage picked up ff the pipe by two stainless-steel wires Cciii be transmitted to any potentiometertype indicating or recording instrument which will show the prevailing flow rate. The sensing head of the device is 3 by 5ΧΛ by 6 in. and will accommodate flow in pipe sizes of V2, 3/*3 or 1 in. A length of stainless-steel pipe 2.5 ft. long is pro vided to assure the required cross sec tional flow distribution over a wide range of installation conditions. Accuracy of the magnetic flowmeter is ±3%. Ε 6

Temperature Controller Technical Equipment Co.'s Electron-oTherm is designed for the precision tem perature control of the constant tempera ture baths used for refractometers, vis cometers, pycnometers, and ASTM equip ment as well as the control of the tempera tures of ovens, furnaces, and related thermal equipment. It has a resistance thermometer regu lator combined with a precision bridge circuit, vacuum tube amplified controller. Operating characteristics are: range, —30° C. to 225° C ; regulation limits, 0.001° C ; heater capacity, 1700 watts. Ε 7

hooked onto the side of the tank to per mit draining solvents off the parts. Eight models are available; they range in capac ity from 5 to 330 gal. All are equipped with motors. Pump unit is optional. Ε 9 W a t e r Filters. Marvel Synclinal Filters are now produced for filtering water as well as hydraulic and other low pressure oil recirculating systems. The sump type is available in capacities from 5 to 100 gal./min. and the Une type from 5 to 5 0 gal./min. Monel mesh sizes from coarse 3 0 to fine 200. Line types operate in any position, may b e serviced without disturbing pipe connections. Ε 10 Annunciator. Tel-Alarm, an automatic alarm unit for remote signalling of fail ure or other-than-normal operation of valves, pumps, heaters, and many other kinds of equipment in process operations is being made by Tigerman-Anderson Co.

All Class 1, Division 2 applications are approved for Tel-Alarm hermetically sealed units. They are self-contained and simply plug into the chassis, which is also standard, varying only in size to accommo date various multiples of units. Uniform bus chassis wiring makes it possible to plug any circuit into the same chassis. E l l pH Strip. A pH testing strip for deter mining acidity in milk, Oxyphen No. 5766, has been brought out by J. Einstein Co. Fresh milk is slightly acid, or of 0.12 to 0.18% apparent acidity ( p H 6.9 to 6 . 4 ) , and deviations important prior to pasteur ization can b e determined by immersing strip in liquid for 5 sec. The strip is paper, Vie by 3 1 / * in. Both indicator and comparative test colors, with the pH num ber printed above each color, are on the same strip. Matching is between wet in dicator and wet comparison colors. Ε 12
