Aminco Rounds Out Important Sys­ tem for Materials Evaluation with Addition of New ADSORPTOMAT

A systemized approach to the evaluation of materials allows, the researcher to better interpret and correlate the various data needed in the rapid development of new and improved materials. Toward this end, Aminco's six-instrument materials evaluation system investigates density, particle size distribution, specific surface area, pore size distribution and pore structure investigations; as well as relating the effects of these factors on other physical and chemical properties, such as thermal analysis and chromatographic characterization of effluent therefrom. Adsorptomat . . . Automatically determines complete nitrogen ad­ sorption and desorption isotherms for pore structure and surface area analysis. Surface area is determined by the B.E.T, method, which involves determination of the quantity of gas which will form a monomolecular layer on the pore surface. Pore size distribution is derived from the Kelvin vapor pressure lowering in the capillary pores and corrected for the adsorbed volume. Sample data is printed out in digital form for computer calculation while a recorder plots the uncorrected adsorption-desorption isotherm. No operator attention is required after set-up. Photo A Aminco-Roller Particle-Size Analyzer . . . Physically separates subsieve powdered materials according to micron sizes for detailed microscopic examination and successive determinations of distribu­ tion vs. particle size range. Any number of size fractions may be obtained within the 5-75 micron range and within size limits as close as desired. Percentage weight of separated fractions is reproducible tO ± 0.5%. Photo Β AmincoWinslow Porosimeter .... Graphically presents pore size, volume and distribution of solid or powdered materials. Samples are immersed in mercury-and subjected to varying degrees of air pressure. The amount of mercury forced into the sample's pores is measured at specific pressure intervals. sures to 5,000 psi for analysis of pores from .035 to 100 microns, and a second for pressures to 15,000 psi for pores from .012 to 100 microns. Photo c Therrao-Grav (Thermogravimetric Anatyzer-TGA) . Measures and automatically records changes in sample weight as a function of time or temperature. Unit incorporates: (1} a weighing system which converts weight changes to electrical signals,· (2) a vacuum system which permits operation in vacuum or controlled pressures in air or gas; (3) a heating system which heats sample at programmed rates to 1000° C, or maintains constant temperature; (4) a recording system which records weight changes as a function of programmed temperature, or time at a constant temperature. Photo D Differential Thermoanalyzer . . . Measures enthalpic effects attending chemical or physical changes that occur as sample temperature increases at a setected rate. DTA curves are plotted showing the temperature difference between a thermally inert reference material and the sample as a function of sample block temperature. Among the physical reactions that may be compared and investigated are crystalline transition, solidification, adsorption, absorption, hydration, corrosion, direct reaction of solids or liquids with gaseous oxidants, and many others. Photo Ε Analytical Gas C h r o m a t o g r a p h . . . For the identification and quantitative assay of effluents of DTA and TGA operations. Unit is available with three interchangeable detector systems: a Thermistor Detector, a Filament Detector and a recently developed R.F. Detector. The Chromatograph removes and analyzes the products of thermal degradation from the DTA or TGA units, resulting chromatographic peaks are then correlated with the valleys and peaks of the thermo­ grams.
