Radioisotope Standards NBS discontinues distribution of standard samples of certain short-lived radioisotopes 1 HE National Bureau of Standards has discontinued distribution of the following radioactive standard samples of short-lived isotopes: Standard Samples Mo. 4916 phosphorus-32, No. 4917 iodine-131, No. 4918 gold-198, No. 4923 sodium-24, and No. 4933 potassium-42. Nuclear-Chicago is now offering standardized samples of these nuclides. The standards which Nuclear-Chicago issues will be derived from comparisons made with the NBS primary standards. Nuclear-Chicago has, however, accepted full responsibility for the standardization of the samples it distributes. The bureau says that discontinuance of this activity will permit it to devote more time toward meeting demands for new and more accurate standards. The bureau will, however, continue t o maintain the primary disintegration-rate standards of these nuclides, with which commercially available secondary standards may be compared. C1

• Four finishes have been added to Allied Research Products' Une of Iridite chromate conversion coatings and electroplating chemicals: Iridite No. 5-P for yellow iridescent coatings on zinc and cadmium plate; Iridite No. 8-4, an all purpose liquid chromate for all forms of zinc and cadmium; Iridite No. 12-P for one-dip, clear, blue-bright finishes on zinc-plated parts; and Iridite No. 14-9, a powdered concentrate for onedip, protective treatment for aluminum surfaces. C2 • New production and packaging facilities in operation at American Cyanamid's rubber chemicals department are turning out an improved form of MBTS (benzothiazyldisulfide) rubber accelerator, company says. New product has a high degree of freedom from dust, excellent dispersibility, and uniform particle size. Also ash is minimized and all magnetic iron particles are removed. Company says it can offer palletized unit loads of 2000 pounds. C3 • Geigy Agricultural Chemicals herbicide, Geigy Simazin, has been approved 74

for general weed control on noncropped land by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Simazin has been extensively tested in the U. S. and Switzerland and has been sold in Europe as a general herbicide for the past two years. C 4 • Dura Commodities has begun experimental marketing of a solvent-dispersible wax, FT-Wax MC. Company says wax has a solidification point above 200° F., acid and saponification value of O, is snow white in color, water clear in the melt, has excellent glossability, and perfect suspension in cold solvent. Dispersions of the wax in mineral spirits or similar solvents also show a minimum of settling and remain liquid at freezing temperatures. Dura has samples of FT-Wax MC for evaluation purposes. C5 • Permanently flat noncurl photoprints are possible with Upson Chemical's new compounds developed for dimensionally stabilizing paper and cellulose. Stabilized papers are unaffected by atmospheric changes or extremes of humidity or dryness, says company. C6 • Jewel Chemical is introducing an aerosol car polish tabbed Jewel Aerosol Car Polish. The polish is easily applied and a 12-oz. aerosol is enough for two applications, says company, each lasting several months. C7 • Shutdowns in packaging machine operations for glue changeovers can be eliminated by Paisley Product* E2131, a completely dextrine-compat ible poly (vinyl acetate) resin emulsion glue. This means, says Paisley, that although less expensive adhesives are used for simple container sealing runs. a direct switch to the new formulation can be made without shutdown. Paisley says E2131 is for use when faster tack, greater water resistance, and higher bond strength are required and where need for an adhesive to grip hard-to-hold board stocks exists. C8 • Fisher Scientific is offering its 30% hydrogen peroxide in new pint-sized, seamless-aluminum cans. These are unbreakable, protected against pressure blow-out, and ICC-approved. Prices per 1-lb. can of Certified Reagent, Reagent, and Technical grades are, respectively, $4.12, $3.03, and $2.10. C9 • Tennessee Corp. is offering Sul-FonAte BL, liquid surfactant said to exhibit high surface activity in strong alkaline

medium and good surface activity in high concentrations of mineral acid. CIO • Sheffield Chemical is producing Sheftene milk proteins in concentrated form. These have use in multiple amino acid supplementation of food and pharmaceutical products. C 11 • Pyrrolidine is now offered by Ansul Chemical on a commercial basis. Ansul's product is technical grade with a minimum purity of 95%. Company says potential applications are in preparing rubber accelerators, insecticides, and pharmaceuticals. C 12 • Allied Chemical & Dye's Barrett Division is offering its Plaskon nylon molding compound in new hermetically sealed 25-lb. size cans. This permits use of the virtually moisture-free compound directly from its shipping container. C 13 • Antioxidant for gasolines and other petroleum derivatives is being offered to refiners by Davison Chemical, division of W . R. Grace. Two forms are offered-Dav-Ad 101 (100% 2,6-ditert-butyl-4 methyl phenol) and DavAd 102 ( 3 3 V 3 % 2,e-di-ieri-butyl-4 methyl phenol in toluene). This marks the company's entry into the petroleum additive field. C 14 • Wyandotte Chemicals new grade of anhydrous caustic soda, Flo-chilled, overcomes the problem of agglomerates found in conventional grades. Wyandotte says the compound is made by a new process making it possible for company to guarantee its flowability. Wyandotte will identify the new grade by a special two-color label. C 15 • Spencer Kellogg is offering waterdispersible Kelecin 1081. The compound is designed to increase emulsification and aid in pigment grinding and dispersion of all types of water base paints. C 16 • Zinc brightener, called Zinc-Kote, is offered by Smoothex Corp. The brightener is said to be compatible and effective in all zinc barrel solutions. C 17 • Milburn is offering a new skin protective coating which is impervious to most organic solvents used in industrial processing. Dubbed Ply No. 9 Gel, the plastic film barrier is attacked only by acetone and methyl and ethyl alcohols, says company.
