UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST PROFESSIONAL POSITION AVAILABLE Facility Director/Staff Associate Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) A Facility Director (FD) is sought for the EFRC Photovoltaics Facility, which is part of an interdisciplinary research center for polymer-based solar energy research, funded for 5 years by the U.S. Department of Energy starting August 2009. The center-tenure is renewable for an additional 5 years based on a performance review in or about 2014. The FD will report to the EFRC Managing Director and consult as needed with the EFRC faculty co-directors. The FD will run and maintain all instrumentation in the facility, which includes inert atmosphere glove boxes, photovoltaic test device fabrication equipment, spectrometers, a photoelectron spectrometer, and various related equipment. The FD may carry out experiments as needed using the facility equipment. The FD will be responsible for training researchers for proper self-use of facility equipment, maintaining current user lists, keeping users informed about equipment status, and creating/ maintaining a time-block reservation system for facility equipment. The FD will set and maintain appropriate safe-practice work procedures and facility access/ security protocols in consultation with the Managing Director and EFRC co-directors. The FD will also be expected to attend any center-funded training at vendor sites as needed to learn how to run and maintain instrumentation acquired as part of the facility. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a sciencerelated field (Electrical Eng., Chemistry, Chem. Eng., Materials Science, or related relevant field); 5–7 years experience in industrial or academic labs dedicated to photovoltaics or equivalent exp.; knowledge of lab equipment and materials used in fabricating materials and devices for photovoltaics, including inert atmosphere techniques; ability to work independently within a team environment; must be self-motivated, energetic with excellent problem-solving skills; detail-oriented; and excellent organizational and record-keeping skills are a must. The university is located in Newark, Delaware, an attractive college town within easy reach of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department has 27 faculty members, approx. 450 undergraduate students, and 100 graduate students. The department has active research programs in environmental, coastal, structural, geotechnical, infrastructure systems, and transportation engineering. The environmental program has state-of-the-art facilities and instruments for lab and field experiments and computing. Faculty also conduct multidisciplinary research at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute (DBI), a 72,000 sq. ft. facility with 35 research labs and core instrumentation in areas including bioimaging, bioinformatics, proteomics, and surface imaging and analysis. In addition to DBI, the University of Delaware Energy Institute and Delaware Environmental Institute provide new opportunities for collaborative and multidisciplinary research.
