Since its introduction, the new F & M Model 180 Carbon Hydrogen Nitrogen Analyzer has become known for the speed, accuracy and simplicity that it brings to the microdetermination
of C, H and N. This is as it should be because these are indeed its important contributions. • Yet we can't help but think that the reputation of the 180 would be even greater if more analysts knew about its two unique self-checking features. • Self-check no. 1: Because the Model 180's single-pan Cahn Ratio Electrobalance® is wired to the recorder, the analyst does not have to read out the weight of the sample. Instead, sample weight is electrically impressed on the recorder input in. such a way that samples of the same composition will give the same peak height regardless of sample weight. Thus any substantial difference between the peak heights of duplicate chromatograms, regardless of differences in sample size, gives immediate warning that there has been an error in the treatment or analysis of the sample or its duplicate. • Self-check no. 2: In the standard chromatogram produced by the F & M Model 180, there is a regular succession of peaks representing the hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon content of the sample. Extraneous peaks apipear if there is incomplete sample reaction and thus give an immediate visible warning that the analysis should be rejected and repeated. • Write for full details.
