Self-Printing
Laboratory
T h e Lawrence Machine and Pump Corp. h a s developed a centrifugal selfpriming pump said Î t o operate as an efficient and positive air pump during the priming operation and subsequently as a regular centrifugal pump without any recirculation or loss During priming, a stream of liquid is circulated from the first port, through the air separator, then through a second port back to tYie pump casing and then to the first port. T h e stream entering is heavily laden with air, since that part of the casing contains the most air; this air is separated from the liquid in the air separator, where its velocity is reduced. The clear liquid is then returned to the pump casing a n d picks up another load of air. This continues until all air has been exhausted from the suction line, the suction chamber, and the pump casing. After that the p u m p operates as a regular side suction centrifugal pump, since the casing is in the form of a volute with the t w o discharge poixs opposite each other and each proportioned for one half of the normal capacity o f the pump.
Stirrer
Eastern Industries, Inc., has announced production of a heavy-duty stirrer. De signed for use with thick, viscous prepa rations, it is described as compact, port able, efficient, and economical to use in many applications. I t is claimed to stir from 1 to 10 gal. of heavy fluid and will handle much larger quantities of thin mix tures. The unit is powered by an open frame motor rated at Vit hp. for continuous duty a.c. or d.c, 110 volts only. The speed control permits variable speeds of 80 to 840 r.p.m. The 0.5-inch propeller shaft can be adjusted as to length within a 30-inch range. Attached to this shaft is a two-blade stainless steel propeller 5.5 inches in diameter. The stirrer is available with a screw clamp or ringstand handle mounting. Ε1

Gage
A large chamber gage claimed to give high accuracy, of level reading is offered by Jerguson Gage & Valve Co. for use in

gaging liquids that boil, where the liquid fluctuates rapidly in the glass. Dis turbance of the meniscus is held to the minimum since the gage chamber has been built to such large diameter. The gage is recommended for use on light end serv ices; it is also valuable as a visual standpipe. It is of the flat glass, reflex type and is made in sections up to any desired length. Ε 2
Grease
Testing
Equipment for testing ball-bearing grease under conditions similar to those of field use has been announced by General Electric Co. The tester accelerates those conditions which contribute to the de struction of a grease, thereby enabling motor users and grease manufacturers to compare the performance of one grease with another. The equipment consists of two components: the ball-bearing-grease tester and the control box. T h e tester is a small motor-driven unit with two bear ings—one for testing and the other as a guide. A heater simulates the source and flow-paths of heat in an electric motor.

Allis-Ohalmcn* Mfg- Co. has announced tube-type, totally enclosed, fan-cooled, squirrel-cage motors ranging from 150 to 600 h p. Internally, the motor is divided into two i~=olat-ed parts with each side hav ing its o w n path of internal air circulation. Because o f its construction, it is possible, through sample maintenance, to keep the motor free o>f power-destroying agents which tend to clog air passages in the con ventional type of fan-cooled motors, the manufacturer states. models which can be interchanged into 58 different combinations for medical re search and industrial and educational purposes, the microscopes' optical systems arc completely sealed to prevent dust from, reaching the interior. All eyepieces and objectives are of new design. The objectives minimize image deterioration a t the edge of the field of view, while the eyepieces are said to pro vide a higher eye point for greater comfort and prevent interference with glasses. Λ dust-proof, sliding nose piece on thrceobjeotive models offers a convenient means of interchanging objectives and ensures viewing the subject with but one objective at a time. Four positions are provided for an illuminator and fluorés-' cent lamp. T h e microscopes are equipped with diffusion disks of black and white that provide background contrast. Ε 6

tion. to storage rooms and laboratories is suggested. T h e conditioner first filters the air and then removes the moisture by adsorption. T h e moisture is blown off in the form of saturated air so that there is never any water to be drained. The unit is 21.5 inches in height and 14.75 inches in diameter. Ε 7
Tearing
Tester
A. small tearing tester is being offered by Thwing-Adbert Instrument Co. as a com panion to its standard Eimendorf tearing tester. Although primarily developed for paper and paper products, the tester is also used on textiles, metal foils, plastic films, and other sheet materials. The smaller tester has a capacity one eighth that of the standard instrument. The total capacity is2O0 grams, suitable for lightweight ma terials. I t is available in any one of four calibrations, reading in grams when testing 1,2, 4, or 8 sheets. Ε 8 VOLUME
