Solvent Extractor Is Compact For the petroleum, chemical, and allied industries, Podbielniak has de signed a centrifugal countercurrent solvent extractor with high capacity and efficiency. Podbielniak says the model, called the CHeniizon, is designed to process 500 gaL pex min. of com bined streams of a cliexnical extraction system having difficult mixing and separating characteristics. The rotor of the Chemizon is 42 in. in diameter by 42 in, wide and is con structed entirely of type 316 stainless; speed is 2000 r.p.rn, Rotor cover is stainless and the base i s stainless clad steel. Specially designed mechanical seals and heavy duty roller bearings lubricated by a forced feed recirculat ing oil system enstire - practically maintenance-free operation, according to company. Portable Evaporator for Pilot Plant Study Rodney Hunt has designed a port able, laboratory model Turba-Film exap orator for pilot plant study of evaporation, single step distillation, deodorization, heating, and cooling. The evaporator uses Rodney Hunt's agitated film method and is provided with a heat transfer area of one square foot. The unit is built of type 316 stain less throughout and is designed for the use of heating mediums up to 250 p.s.i.g. and 700° F. The steam jacket of the evaporator is also baffled for the use of hot oil as a heat transfer medium. The condenser is a vaporin-tube unit of 316 stainless in contact -with process vapor. A surface con denser provides for handling the
studies. Company says the Turba-Film evaporator can be supplied as an indi vidual unit with stand or with auxiliary condensing equipment, or as a com plete packaged plant including vacuum equipment, feed pumps, discharge pumps, and instruments as required. The Turba-Film is capable of evap orating up to 5000 lb. of water per hr., according to Rodney Hunt. Unit is designed t o handle organic and inor ganic chemicals, solvents, latices, phar maceutical "mycins", vitamins, juice concentrates, edible oils, gelatin, glues, confectionaries, coffee, and detergents. Beckman, measures the density of a sample gas by null balance principle. A small dumbbell is supported on a horizontal quartz fiber. One ball of the dumbbell is punctured so that it will not experience buoyancy effects. The otîier ball tends to rise or dip as the density of the gas increases or decreases. Thus the dumbbell creates a rotational force about the quartz fiber as it responds to density changes. The magnitude of this force is proportional to the density of the sample gas.
