ONLINEIN PRINT WEB SITES A "virtual" environmental conference, Environment97, planned by the United Kingdom's Institution of Chemical Engineers (http://www. environment97.org), is scheduled for Nov. 3-14 at the Web site, where it appears as a scientific meeting. Registration secures access to all site areas and e-mail updates before the conference. The free conference, only existing on the Internet, includes more than 150 papers on topics ranging from climate change to urban air quality. There is also a concentration of papers about contaminated land and life cycle analysis, topics of particular interest in the United Kingdom. Keynote papers will have corresponding online discussion groups. NPDES Permits Navigator (http:// www.epa.gov/owm/beta7.htm) provides comprehensive information about EPA's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System. The site provides state-by-state updates on permits being decided. Details of pilot projects to make the system more flexible and a link to STORET, the primary information system for EPA, states, and other interested parties for tracking permit data, are also available. The National Estuarine Research Reserves System site (http://www. nos.noaa.gov/ocrm/nerr/welcome. html) offers information about this National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) program to protect and study estuaries. There are links describing the 22 designated estuarine reserves and the 6 reserves under consideration. The site also provides information about research grants. NOAA's estuarine research program also sponsors Estuary Net (http:// inlet.geol.scarolina.edu/estnet.html), a site to assist citizen volunteers and high school students in solving nonpoint source pollution problems in

estuaries and their watersheds. The site links to existing high school pro grams and has information on estuaries and estuarine ecology, data management, and quality assurance. The Transportation for Livable Communities Network (TLCNet) (http://www.tlcnetwork.org) addresses transportation and its effect on the environment and communities. Three groups, discussing streets and roads, public transit, and policy and planning, allow users to post information and questions. The site also offers documents on transportation and the environment that can be downloaded as Microsoft Word files. TLCNet is a project of the Conservation Law Foundation, a New England environmental advocacy group.

A collection of 26 papers discusses design and optimization uses for medical, industrial, and environmental applications requiring biosensors for monitoring process control in the biotechnology sector and environmental protection. 101 Handbook of Carcinogenic Potency and Genotoxicity Databases, Lois Swirsky Gold and Errol Zeiger (CRC Press, 1997, 754 pp., $125.00). Designed as a reference analyzing the results of decades of animal cancer tests, this volume brings together two databases that present experimental results, by chemical, and provide citations to the original experiments. 102 Handbook of Copper Compounds and Applications, H. Wayne Richardson (Marcel Dekker, Inc., 1997, 448 pp., $175.00). Written by experts in their respective fields, this collection of 14 papers on the properties and behavior of the copper ion contains numerous references, tables, equations, and figures. 103 How to Control Costs in Your Pollution Prevention Program, Judith A. Cichowicz (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1997, 445 pp., $75.00). This introductory text for environmental managers and engineers examines the practical tools needed to identify, evaluate, and implement pollution prevention alternatives. 104

BOOKS Chemometrics in Environmental Analysis, J. W. Einax, H. W. Zwanziger, and S. Geiss (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1997, 384 pp., $79.95). Basic methods, such as univariate statistics, regression analysis, statistical test planning, and multivariate data analysis, are the focus of this text discussing the investigation of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and pedosphere. 100 Handbook of Biosensors and Electronic Noses, Erika Kress-Rogers (CRC Press, 1997, 695 pp., $110.00).

Water, Rivers and Creeks, Luna B. Leopold (University Science Books, 1997, 185 pp., $30.00). An introduction to hydrology, geomorphology, and the practical formulation of policy for students of environmental studies, legislators, and policy makers interested in the use, control, and management of water is detailed in this text. 105
